Gliders in the Piazza 2017

Like every year, Aero Club Valle d’Aosta touched down in Piazza Chanoux, Aosta on Sunday 17th.
Aero Club Valle d’Aosta, in collaboration with the Fédération des Aéroclubs de la Vallée d’Aoste (the body bringing together the region’s two main aero clubs) put two gliders on display in the city centre.
Crowds of interested visitors had the chance to see the aircraft up close by sitting inside them, “tinkering” with the controls and flight equipment, and talking to instructors, pilots and pupils from the flight school in order to learn more about how to fly without an engine among the highest peaks in Europe by harnessing the power of natural ascending currents.
Gliding is an air sport that uses unpowered aircraft designed to be highly aerodynamic. The aim is to fly by gliding, i.e. using nothing more than the ascending currents present in the atmosphere.
Aero Club Valle d’Aosta has been successfully gliding in the valley since 1959, when the Corrado Gex Regional Airport was opened, thanks to the excellent conditions found in our mountains. Over the years, the aero club has hosted many foreign pilots and has seen several distance and altitude records set. Today the club is a hive of gliding activity, which is proving extremely popular.
Aero Club Valle d’Aosta’s goal is to popularise the discipline and dispel false myths linked to the real possibilities of this air sport; in reality, the requirements are good health, a certain amount of commitment, and above all passion.
